Playing video games live on Twitch might not seem like the best way to get American voters out to the polls, but New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not known for her conventional approaches.

Ocasio-Cortez streamed the popular game “Among Us,” which has recently become one of the most popular games throughout the country, and drew in 439,000 viewers at one point - one of the highest peaks for Twitch streamers this year. She was joined by fellow Democrat Ilhan Omar and top streamers Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Hasan “Hasanabi” Piker and Ali “Myth” Kabbani, who were all streaming alongside her.

AOC appeared on Twitch last year where she called into a fundraiser but now she has an account which has already gained 545,000 followers. Her first appearance on the platform, which lasted more than three hours, gained over 4.5 million views.

Using video games and streaming platforms to reach the younger voters has been used by multiple politicians throughout the year. AOC’s stream follows Joe Biden’s campaign, which created merchandise in a game that gained traction earlier in the year, “Animal Crossing: New Horizons,” a game where you decorate and build on your own island, completing tasks along the way.

The congresswoman used this opportunity to encourage viewers to vote on IWillVote.com, a website created by the Democratic party with information about voting. The website was visible on a message board behind her for the entirety of the stream.

Ocasio-Cortez asked other streamers and gamers on the live stream how they were planning to vote. Myth said on Twitter that this would be his first time voting. “It’s super easy to do so do it,” he told his 2.3 million Twitter followers in a post.

AOC ended the stream saying to hundreds of thousands of mostly young voters: “Please again make sure you register to vote, make your plan to vote.”
